Rope resist

This game/exercise is based on partner-generated resistance. That is, resistance is provided, not by weights or elastic cords, but by the muscular contractions of your friends and training partners. This practice takes some getting used to, but when you get comfortable with it, you'll find it to be rich and highly creative.

In this instance, we explore core body strength in the transverse plane. The basic movements are left-right turns of the torso, as well as the popular diagonal woodchop or snowshovel movements.

Grab the rope as shown in the illustration and start the movement. Your partner will move in complementary fashion. That is, he will try to slow down your movement and you will try to slow down his. For every yin, a yang.

It will take a few strokes to work out exactly who is doing what in the relationship, but don't worry. It will soon become obvious. Your partner should be slowing down your movement and forcing you to work harder. When you reach the limit of the movement, switch roles and directions.

Remember, this is not a competitive relationship. On the contrary, this is a non-zero sum game in which there are ample rewards to go around. Each person in the game gets some vigorous, powerful movement out of the deal.

Be sure to play with the variations. The most obvious are: flat movement, high-low/diagonal, low-low. And of course, you can do them all on one foot for even greater challenge.
