Bump-n-stick

If you've been doing step-n-sticks (aka "step-n-stops"), you'll find this to be a good progression. To review, a regular "step-n-stick" is a big step with a solid, no-wobble landing. It's a test of your whole-body stability and your ability to manage motion.

In this variation, we add the unpredictability of a partner-coach (aka "heckler"). Simply stand at ease, with your partner behind you. Relax as much as possible. Then, whenever the moment is right, your partner gives you a bump with hand, hip or shoulder. It's strong enough to motivate your step, but not so strong as to be aggressive. As before, step or hop to absorb the motion, then stick the landing with perfect grace and stability.

You can then do a series of bump-n-sticks across the room or field. The "coach" applies the bump whenever he chooses, but not in any predictable rhythm. Mix up the timing and the direction for the best experience. And be sure to communicate. If the bumps are too nice and you want more, say so. If the bumps are too harsh, say that too.

This is good training for the real world and it also makes sense for aspiring martial artists.
